AusRegistry International makes ICANN Brussels yellow

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

by Tony Kirsch

Some ideas start off good………..and then actually surprise you and become truly brilliant.

As one of the major sponsors for the ICANN Brussels meeting currently underway, the AusRegistry International team spent a number of hours looking for fun and innovative ways to engage with the expected 1500 attendees.

It was always going to be a well attended event. A great city and in particular, a crucial time in our industry with the process for new gTLDs rapidly approaching finalisation and the ever expanding interest in Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs) among the hot topics.

We set out to make a statement at the ICANN with an idea that would generate opportunities for our Business Development team to engage with ICANN patrons, represent our commitment to innovation within the Domain Name industry and reinforce our “TLD Specialist” brand position. We also wanted to the idea to capture the personality, creativity and ownership  of the new gTLD program at a time where excitement levels are about to reach fever pitch.

Tough brief?

Not really…We have some great creative people in our team and I enjoy working with them to create awareness for AusRegistry International for all the right reasons.

Somewhere along the way, we came up with the idea of getting people to create their own “TLD t-shirt” right there at our ICANN booth. A simple idea you might say, but it’s always the simplest marketing activities that make the most impact. We chose bright yellow to ensure our t-shirts would stand out and gave conference attendees the opportunity to own their own little piece of the web on their t-shirt (no, this wasn’t an EOI process for new gTLDs)!

While we were excited about the potential of our new idea, we had no idea how successful it was going to be. 500 T-shirts, over two days, with a second order on its way. We’ve been run off our feet in the last few days making t-shirts for everyone and it’s great to be watching people walking around the meeting wearing our shirts  –  kids names, partners names (brownie points for the boys), pets, nicknames, acronyms, brands and even a few IDNs are being sported around ICANN #38 to add a little AusRegistry International colour and humour to the conference.

From all reports even ICANN Chairman, Peter Dengate-Thrush and ICANN CEO, Rod Beckstrom were seen wearing the “.peter” and  “.dad” shirts respectively which is fantastic.

So for those of you at the meeting, make sure you come and see us at our booth in the exhibition area to get your free shirt. Stocks are low so come and say hello to one of our friendly staff ASAP. While you’re there, have a chat to us about your new gTLD requirements.

For those of you participating remotely, make sure you watch the video feed for the Public Forum meeting on Thursday afternoon (Brussels time). Each person that has received a shirt will be encouraged to wear it to the forum as a sign of symbolism to the ICANN Board that the community supports new gTLDs and are ready to move forward in this next step of innovation and expansion of the internet.

We can’t wait to turn Brussels yellow!

AusRegistry International joins AfTLD

Monday, October 5th, 2009

By Jon Lawrence

Last week, AusRegistry International became the first Associate Member of the African Top Level Domains Organization (AfTLD).

AfTLD is an industry group set up to provide a forum for the discussion of policy and the sharing of ideas and best practice among African ccTLD Managers and to provide representation within ICANN and other global internet governance forums. AfTLD currently has 18 full members, representing a range of countries from all corners of the African continent.

As an Associate Member, we look forward to sharing our significant ccTLD expertise and experience with other AfTLD members, to assist with capacity building and the ongoing development of Policy standards, Administrative processes and Technical infrastructure throughout the African ccTLD community.

In addition to becoming an Associate Member, AusRegistry International is sponsoring the West Africa Francophone ccTLD workshop, to be held in Dakar, Senegal from 7 -12 December 2009. This workshop, to be hosted by the Senegalese Network Information Center (NIC-SN) and Agence de Regulation des Telecommunication et des Postes (ARTP-Senegal) will provide technical training to French-speaking staff from newly re-delegated ccTLDs in the region and forms part of AfTLD’s ongoing capacity building program.

For more information, see the AfTLD website.

AusRegistry joins Registry Internet Safety Group

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

By Chris Wright

As part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining the highest levels of security within the .au domain space, AusRegistry International’s parent company AusRegistry has recently joined the Registry Internet Safety Group.

The Registry Internet Safety Group (RISG) is a global group of Top Level Domain Name Registries and other Internet-related companies whose mission is to work collaboratively to combat Internet identity theft.  RISG members and invited experts work together towards improving Internet security, developing domain name industry best practices and sharing information to improve overall Internet user security.

AusRegistry has built strong working relationships with industry stakeholders that help to ensure that the .au domain space continues to be one of the most secure large country code Top Level Domains.  These stakeholders include auDA, the .au Registrar community, AUSCERT and relevant law enforcement agencies as well as other Registries and Registrars within the wider Asia-Pacific region and further afield.

We look forward to building on these relationships as we support the mission of RISG to continue improving internet security for users worldwide.

For further information see the RISG website.

AusRegistry International to attend APTLD meeting in Beijing China

Friday, July 24th, 2009

By Jon Lawrence

Continuing our active participation in the ccTLD community, AusRegistry International will be attending the Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Association (APTLD) Members meeting to be held in Beijing on 20th and 21st of August.

APTLD currently boasts 36 member ccTLDs from Asia, the Pacific and the Middle East, representing more than half the world’s population and over a dozen associate members from across the industry spectrum (including AusRegistry International).  APTLD plays an important role as a forum for members to share their experiences in relation to technological and operational issues, as well as acting as an interface to other international Internet coordinating bodies.

At the Beijing meeting, AusRegistry International will be sharing our experiences relating to the implementation of IDN functionality into our Registry System and building on existing relationships with ccTLD managers from around the region.

We look forward to seeing our many clients and friends across the region in Beijing.

See the APTLD website for more information about this meeting.

AusRegistry International to attend ICANN Live Outreach Meetings

Monday, July 20th, 2009

By Axia Jarnblad

With the introduction of new gTLDs in early 2010, ICANN is organising meetings at different locations across the world as part of the Global Consultation and Outreach program. Meetings have been held earlier this week in New York and London and upcoming events are also scheduled for Abu Dhabi and Hong Kong in the near future.

These meetings have been specifically organised to educate businesses, trademark experts, professional associations, consumer and other civil society groups, members of the domain name industry, government officials, potential applicants and the ICANN community on the progress of the new gTLD program and to facilitate feedback for further improvements.

Being heavily involved in the domain name industry and the new gTLD process, senior AusRegistry International staff will be in attendance at the meetings in both Hong Kong (24th July) and Abu Dhabi (4th August).

As the two events will focus mainly on new gTLDs and Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs) they are of special interest to AusRegistry International as we have been active in both of these areas for quite some time.
